Reflection of my summative submission.

Since my last formative feedback point, I have been super motivated regarding my work. The last hurdle was upon me and I was ready to smash it. After gaining so much knowledge throughout my time completing the buddy system, I could put all of this to the test. My 3rd year buddy Holly, has been very helpful and has motivated me greatly. Keeping in contact, I have turned to her with any queries I have had. It has been a great and inspiring opportunity, to see into the future and grasp what is expected from me throughout my last year at CSAD.

Replying to my formative feedback, I have refined all my final designs, and sent several to be digitally printed on to fabric. I have also taken great care in choosing what fabric (jersey and cotton) and what weight of fabric was best to use. I found this very rewarding as my designs have come out very vibrant, with the perfect colours. Furthermore, using realistic fabrics has brought my design into the real world. Being able to feel them against my skin and stretch and pull them, has projected how they would look when finally made into garments.

One big aspect I took from viewing the 3rd year degree show, was how professional and refined everyone’s collections were. This forced me to sit myself down and practise mounting my work. This is a very big week point for myself, and although it took hours to perfect, I am so glad I took the time to perfect my mounting of samples, as the overall finish really made my collection shine. I was shocked, how much more professional my collection appeared after more attention to detail was given in this aspect.

Another point inspired from the 3rd year degree show, was really making the collection mine, and adding a personal touch to it all. I decided to create my own logo and collection name to place at the top of my collection. I chose not to include my own name in this logo design, as my target audience are young males, and ‘Emily Sophia’ can portray a feminine sense to the collection which I did not want. After hours of market research, I decided to name my collection ‘Rock Cod designs’ and the rest followed through. Hand illustrating my favourite picture of a Rock Cod that I came across and digitally developing it further. I am glad I decided to make this logo as I think it add a professional as well as personal touch to my work. I think it ties all my designs together and portrays my colour palette to everyone clearly.

Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed this year and have learned so much. I have discovered and decided on a definite route to take my practise- menswear fashion textiles. I am happy to have found an area that I am very passionate about and that inspires me every day.

Constellation Level 5 Reflective Piece.

Reflecting on my previous experiences throughout constellation so far is great way for me to reflect on my strengths and learn from any weaknesses and challenges I have faced. My first term consisted of lectures titled The Many Guises of the Absurd held Jayne Hall-Cunnick. I found these lectures instantly interesting, and was excited to attend and learn more each week. In comparison to last year, I have improved greatly from a result of not completing last year’s work to the best of my ability. My attendance was 100% better and so was my interest during the class. Due to these lectures being a brand-new topic to myself and it being quite an ‘absurd’ and difficult topic to first comprehend, I challenged myself to work hard and grasps the theme to a high standard. This included re-writing class room notes, researching into the topics discussed in the lecture further and completing a lot of self-teaching outside of constellation hours. I benefited greatly from challenging myself this much. As constellation has been my weakest of the three modules so far in my university course, I was determined to improve my standards a lot.

I think I achieved what I set out to do first term, as I successfully completed my formative essay which in comparison to last years, was a vast improvement. This improvement was a result of a great deal more background reading of academic texts regarding my topic and essay which resulted in my essay being a lot easier to write. I was considering several different ideas and had an opinion on a statement that I read due to a strong knowledge around my essay. Although I completed a vast amount of background reading, I still think a lot more reading could have been completed to strengthen my essays pointed even further. I acknowledge that me proof reading my essay several times rather than just once help my essay a lot, as well returning to proof read it after a break with a fresh mind.

Regarding my dissertation, I decided to continue further with a general theme of existentialism. I have decided to investigate the theme of essence in regards to Jean-Paul Sartre and its relation with other relevant theories. Furthermore, whether essence can be projected into a piece of art. I have decided to apply said theories to the works of Louise Bourgeois with specific focus on pieces influenced from her maternal experiences. My overall argument will investigate the comparison of children in relation to art regarding obtaining an essence, referring to Sartre’s Being and Nothingness and several other research pieces that include contradictory and agreeing statements regarding Sartre’s theories.

I need to complete a lot more background reading regarding my dissertation. Completing a sufficient amount of academic research throughout my last essay lead me to be successful throughout, the more background reading I am completing in regards to my dissertation, the more I am understanding and deciding what direction of research I want to take. Previously reading ‘The sculpture Journal by Elyse Speaks’ and ‘Narrative inside out: Louise Bourgeois’ spider as a theoretical object by Mieke Bal’ and ‘Fantastic Reality: Louis Bourgeois and a Story of Modern Art by Julia Bryan-Wilson” I have gained a much greater knowledge on Louise Bourgeois and how her personal life affected her themes of artwork but I still have a lot more research to complete and to include several examples of pieces regarding Bourgeois’ various themes. Already analysing ‘Jean-Paul Sartre’s Being and Nothingness by Mark Rowlands’ and ‘Existentialism in Modern Art by Justin Wolf’ I have grasped a gaining knowledge of Sartre’s theories and people’s interpretations of them. To progress further, I need to complete extensive research surrounding Being and Nothingness, analysing contradictory and influenced narratives and journals in regards to it. This will help me to gain an outstanding knowledge throughout this theory that I can proceed by applying to Bourgeois’ pieces regarding the topic of essence.

To gain contextual research throughout my dissertation proposal, I used Met Search, being quite new to this software it took a while for me to get to grips with it. After perusing through and learning how to use this search engine, I now understand why it is such an important tool to use. To improved my research further, I need to revisit the library and loan books to gain a variety of research. I want to loan books out that teach me about Bourgeois’ life further and specifically how and what work it really influenced. I am excited to visit the library again which is rare for me, this gives me confidence that I have chosen to write about the thing for my dissertation as I am excited to discover and learn more about the topic.

My dissertation relates back to my practise as since discovering Louise Bourgeois and her pieces, she has influenced me in my own work. Furthermore, gaining knowledge throughout existentialist thinking and helped me to interoperate other work in a new approach that is very enlightening to me.

The next steps to succeed in my dissertation will be to read a vast amount of more literature and strengthen my knowledge in aspect such as; Sartre’s theories, where children come into it, and specific pieces of Bourgeois’ art work. I have done extensive research regarding journals but they have been a bit broad, I am now going to research into more specific journals surrounding my topics.

To conclude, I am very happy with my progression throughout constellation this year, I feel like I have improved greatly in comparison to last year. I am self-teaching and learning loads of new things and am excited to progress further and complete my dissertation to a high standard.

Lino Printing

As a development on from potato stamping, I’ve decided to explore a more refined form of printing. I have little experience when it comes to lino printing, but it’s a skill I’ve wanted to develop since my first experience

Before diving straight into carving the lino, I quickly sketched out some ideas I wanted to develop. In reflection on previous drawings, I’ve decided to explore faces of fish more, specifically fish with large/sharp teeth. These are some of the sketches I created

Deciding to go ahead with my shark image, I created my first lino print. Creating this in a dye work shop, gave me access to specialist equipment and lino printing ink. In reflection of this attempt, I’ve carved my detail to much/thickly. Leaving large white patches in my print, I do like the simplicity of my design but this made the print too simple for my liking.

My second attempt was created at home, using a finer carving tool I could create a lot more detail through the head of the shark and create sharper more refined teeth. As I created these at home, I didn’t have access to a print roller or lino printing ink, I created this one using a wide paintbrush and acrylic paint. I used these to get an idea of the image I would create one I had access to the correct tools.

To experiment further with paints, I created these prints using gouache paint, as this is a water based substance the paint gathered up in little splodges on the lino, when printed it gave this bubble effect on the paper which I found interesting, I think this compliments the theme and atheistic I am aiming for.

After gaining confidence using the carving tool, I created a larger print using the side portrait of the fish for inspiration. Due to the bigger piece of lino, I could experiment with a variety of carving tools with bigger widths. Again, having to acrylic paint and paint brush to print this, I am excited to develop further and use the correct ink and rollers to create this print to reveal all the detail I carved into this piece.

To develop my lino prints, I will re-print these using the correct ink and tools onto paper and fabric to see how they responded and re-evaluate them from there. I want to combined previous stencil like drawing and lino printing together and see how each technique will complement each other.

Journal Research- Conscious Living.

Viewpoint magazine delivers visual, editorial and statistical information to brands, designers, and agencies determined to create lifestyle products, campaigns and environments that anticipate consumer demand.

I have chosen to look at an article called Finding our better selves found in issue 36 of viewpoints collection titled Conscious Living. The article is very long and consists of many subheadings. Due to the nature of this set task, I’ve chosen to concentrate on one subheading called The Evidence.

This article generally outlines the movement of consumers and businesses choosing purpose over profit. As we face an environmental crisis of global proportions, sustainability is no longer a simple buzzword. This article suggests the future belongs to activist brands who deliver accountability and transparency to conscious living choices.  As sustainable fashion is true passion of my own, this has taught me a great deal and help me to develop thoughts and opinions in regards to conscious living that I can take into my practise.

Making a sea change

One significant issue activist brands and consumers are consciously acting together on is the world’s ocean.  This is a great collective theme as the ocean is crucial part of the world and it belongs to everyone so everyone is responsible- the oceans health is the worst it has ever been due to over-fishing and pollution. Examples giving throughout this article of activist brands are:

Parley for the oceans

Parley for oceans are activist who organise group rallies and events over the world in regards to the oceans health. Collaborating with Adidas and designed by Alexander Taylor have created a sportswear line made from plastic salvaged from the ocean. This has given me a lot to consider in regards to progression with my designs. This progression in sustainable fashion in relation to the ocean is a great reflection of my brief and is a new research point for my project.

No fish, No nothing

Kenzo developed a clothing line in conjunction with the Blue Marine Foundation, the collection named “No Fish, No Nothing” emphasises a strong message through bold colours and prints. This relates and inspires my project as this brand produced illustrative images throughout their designs, at a much larger scale than I had ever considered. This inspires me to experiment with scale in my designs.

Pantone colours

At the end of this article was a page of pantone colours, similar to mine. This gives me confidence in my own colour palette now as similar colours have been used in very successful collections with other activist brands.

Thoughts, new ideas and aims.

Tomorrow is the beginning of part two of the subject brief. After venturing off to field the past five weeks, I am excited to get back in the mind set of thorough textile work and menswear design.

After re-reading the set subject brief and my own hypothetical design commission brief, it’s been a great way to get my mind and creative senses in gear. On reflection to my own brief I’ve decided I need to re-write some areas as my ideas and outcomes aren’t as clearly described and set out as they could be. I am happy on reflection that I stuck to the schedule I set, so I will re-make another one for this term also.

I am happy with the amount of drawing and mark-making experiments I produced last term, although I will keep adding to these as new ideas arise and to keep my mind in the “surfy”, illustrative mind set it needs to be in. To develop my drawing aspect further, I want to research closer into fish with giant teeth, I think this fish and image suits my HDCB well and the style of drawing I have previously used.

Print will be my home for the next couple of weeks as screen printing will be a main focus in regards to my designs progressing, I want to transfer some drawing I have previously created from paper to fabric through screen-printing. I also want to experiment with lino-printing and mono-printing.

To add to these drawing and designs I will create, I want to experiment with CAD as it will be interesting to discover new colour-ways in regards to my colour palette.

I want to develop and broaden my research file, to do so, I will continue to research into a variety or artists and designers that inspire my work. I want to re-visit shop areas I have previously research online into to gain a knowledge of the atmosphere in the shop and around the brands too.

As well as focussing on print-making, I want to dedicate some of my time to designing and creating forms of embroidery patches in reply to my HDCB and explore a further range of colours in regards to colour palette.

Throughout all of this, I really want my blog to flourish, by creating daily blogs posts in regards to my progress, development and inspiration.
