Hypothetical Design Commission Brief.

One of the deliverables for our brief was to write our own personal hypothetical design commission brief. This was based around our favourite and chosen designer or company from out initial Research. My chosen company is Element, a skate wear brand who interests me a lot and tends to my wants of designing prints for menswear and accessories.

My hypothetical design commission brief:

Emily Sophia Davies (ST20081749)

  1. Introduction of broad, general aims:

To create a fashion textile based collection for menswear and accessories at Element inspired by the theme of ‘Sea Creatures’.

  1. List of specific objectives:
  • To explore and document the theme of ‘sea creatures’.
  • To look into and report on the targeted market of menswear and accessories, particularly younger men aged between 18-25, with a more casual vibe.
  • To study and review future trend/forecast journals such as WGSN to grasp style and colour trends for season S/S18.
  • To summarise all relevant aspects of the theme of ‘sea creatures’ through a series of visually inspiring mood boards.
  • To produce and log a body of clean cut illustrations of sea creatures while experimenting and combining with more expressive wet techniques such as watercolours and inks, as appropriate for Element’s target market of young males between the ages of 18-25.
  • To creatively develop ideas and selected images using specialist methods such as drawing, painting, mark making and screen printing.
  • To produce a selection of samples and designs on a range of appropriate, carefully chosen substrates, this may include a variety of durable fabrics with a variety of weight.
  • To sample with technical processes such as print and dye effects, as well as possible embroidery effects to a growing professional standard.
  • Present a final collection of designs, some of which also demonstrate:
  • alternative colour-way designs
  • alternative scale of prints
  • co-ordinating design groups
  • accurately repeating pattern designs.
  • To illustrate and present selected designs fashion textiles,in situ, as CAD visuals.
  1. An introductory paragraph, to clarify the context and market/ client:

Element is a competitive skate brand, that delivers an iconic ‘skater’ look also known for the use more experimental prints and clean edge illustrations. Element delivers a timeless look while keeping up to date with colour and style trends, appealing to younger males because of their iconic ‘skater boy’ look, with the use of bold quirky print designs. Designing for younger males who like these bold iconic prints appeals to my design aesthetics as I can take more risks when experimenting with my design of prints.
Choosing a ‘Sea Creatures’ theme for Elements is a good theme as a variety of quirky and exciting prints and illustrations can be designed with the use of eye-catching shapes and patterns drawn from the sea creatures themselves. The colour pallet surround this theme, e.g. dark blue tones contrasting with bold silver and grey tones takes the trend into S/S18 and also appeals to their target audience colour taste.

  1. The research base:

Having previously looked around ‘Two Seasons’ in Cardiff city centre, a retail store which provide and extensive collection of Element’s designs, I plan on visiting a variety of other store that also provide collections such as; Route One. I plan next to visit Bristol aquarium to gather more primary research such as; photographs and field sketches of various sea-life I could use in my collection. Alongside my primary research, I will continue using secondary sources such as websites including Pintrest and WGSN.

  1. The proposal/ brief. Your concept/ market area/ materials/ processes/ techniques:

Keeping in concept with clean cut illustrations for my design collection, I want to incorporate very individual and interesting shapes and pattern amongst them. Instead of going for popular sea life such as dolphins, turtles and sharks, I want to inject some fresh new and quirky ideas into my theme. By heading deeper and deeper into the ocean where some strange creatures live and flourish, packed with intriguing shapes and textures, I think this is the perfect influence for a fresh new idea for illustration when it comes to sea life and creatures. I hope to embody Element’s signature style of edgy, bold prints and clean illustrations.
I am going to create a variety of exciting and different prints when I experiment, as well as a series of my favourite design, which can be incorporated into a repeat pattern. Element uses durable yet light fabrics when designing their menswear as the target audience is very active. I will have to bare this in mind when selecting fabrics that I will be printing on to.
I am designing with menswear and accessories in mind; I want to create prints suitable for clothing ranging from t-shirt to hoodies as well as a range of accessories ranging from rucksacks, to laptop sleeves, to hats.
I will experiment combining with bold illustrations with bold striking colours as well as more experimental colour transfers, e.g. ice dyeing and heat press. I also want to experiment with adding stich e.g. free hand machine embroidery to add a new dimension of colour to my designs. Hopefully these designs will appeal to young, active, trendy male I am pitching my collection to.
