Since my last formative feedback point, I have been super motivated regarding my work. The last hurdle was upon me and I was ready to smash it. After gaining so much knowledge throughout my time completing the buddy system, I could put all of this to the test. My 3rd year buddy Holly, has been very helpful and has motivated me greatly. Keeping in contact, I have turned to her with any queries I have had. It has been a great and inspiring opportunity, to see into the future and grasp what is expected from me throughout my last year at CSAD.
Replying to my formative feedback, I have refined all my final designs, and sent several to be digitally printed on to fabric. I have also taken great care in choosing what fabric (jersey and cotton) and what weight of fabric was best to use. I found this very rewarding as my designs have come out very vibrant, with the perfect colours. Furthermore, using realistic fabrics has brought my design into the real world. Being able to feel them against my skin and stretch and pull them, has projected how they would look when finally made into garments.
One big aspect I took from viewing the 3rd year degree show, was how professional and refined everyone’s collections were. This forced me to sit myself down and practise mounting my work. This is a very big week point for myself, and although it took hours to perfect, I am so glad I took the time to perfect my mounting of samples, as the overall finish really made my collection shine. I was shocked, how much more professional my collection appeared after more attention to detail was given in this aspect.
Another point inspired from the 3rd year degree show, was really making the collection mine, and adding a personal touch to it all. I decided to create my own logo and collection name to place at the top of my collection. I chose not to include my own name in this logo design, as my target audience are young males, and ‘Emily Sophia’ can portray a feminine sense to the collection which I did not want. After hours of market research, I decided to name my collection ‘Rock Cod designs’ and the rest followed through. Hand illustrating my favourite picture of a Rock Cod that I came across and digitally developing it further. I am glad I decided to make this logo as I think it add a professional as well as personal touch to my work. I think it ties all my designs together and portrays my colour palette to everyone clearly.
Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed this year and have learned so much. I have discovered and decided on a definite route to take my practise- menswear fashion textiles. I am happy to have found an area that I am very passionate about and that inspires me every day.

I have chosen to look at an article called Finding our better selves found in issue 36 of viewpoints collection titled Conscious Living. The article is very long and consists of many subheadings. Due to the nature of this set task, I’ve chosen to concentrate on one subheading called The Evidence.
This article generally outlines the movement of consumers and businesses choosing purpose over profit. As we face an environmental crisis of global proportions, sustainability is no longer a simple buzzword. This article suggests the future belongs to activist brands who deliver accountability and transparency to conscious living choices. As sustainable fashion is true passion of my own, this has taught me a great deal and help me to develop thoughts and opinions in regards to conscious living that I can take into my practise.
Making a sea change
One significant issue activist brands and consumers are consciously acting together on is the world’s ocean. This is a great collective theme as the ocean is crucial part of the world and it belongs to everyone so everyone is responsible- the oceans health is the worst it has ever been due to over-fishing and pollution. Examples giving throughout this article of activist brands are:
Parley for the oceans
Parley for oceans are activist who organise group rallies and events over the world in regards to the oceans health. Collaborating with Adidas and designed by Alexander Taylor have created a sportswear line made from plastic salvaged from the ocean. This has given me a lot to consider in regards to progression with my designs. This progression in sustainable fashion in relation to the ocean is a great reflection of my brief and is a new research point for my project.
No fish, No nothing
Kenzo developed a clothing line in conjunction with the Blue Marine Foundation, the collection named “No Fish, No Nothing” emphasises a strong message through bold colours and prints. This relates and inspires my project as this brand produced illustrative images throughout their designs, at a much larger scale than I had ever considered. This inspires me to experiment with scale in my designs.
At the end of this article was a page of pantone colours, similar to mine. This gives me confidence in my own colour palette now as similar colours have been used in very successful collections with other activist brands.
Toile De Jouy
Tomorrow is the beginning of part two of the subject brief. After venturing off to field the past five weeks, I am excited to get back in the mind set of thorough textile work and menswear design.
After re-reading the set subject brief and my own hypothetical design commission brief, it’s been a great way to get my mind and creative senses in gear. On reflection to my own brief I’ve decided I need to re-write some areas as my ideas and outcomes aren’t as clearly described and set out as they could be. I am happy on reflection that I stuck to the schedule I set, so I will re-make another one for this term also.
I am happy with the amount of drawing and mark-making experiments I produced last term, although I will keep adding to these as new ideas arise and to keep my mind in the “surfy”, illustrative mind set it needs to be in. To develop my drawing aspect further, I want to research closer into fish with giant teeth, I think this fish and image suits my HDCB well and the style of drawing I have previously used.
Print will be my home for the next couple of weeks as screen printing will be a main focus in regards to my designs progressing, I want to transfer some drawing I have previously created from paper to fabric through screen-printing. I also want to experiment with lino-printing and mono-printing.
To add to these drawing and designs I will create, I want to experiment with CAD as it will be interesting to discover new colour-ways in regards to my colour palette.
I want to develop and broaden my research file, to do so, I will continue to research into a variety or artists and designers that inspire my work. I want to re-visit shop areas I have previously research online into to gain a knowledge of the atmosphere in the shop and around the brands too.
As well as focussing on print-making, I want to dedicate some of my time to designing and creating forms of embroidery patches in reply to my HDCB and explore a further range of colours in regards to colour palette.
Throughout all of this, I really want my blog to flourish, by creating daily blogs posts in regards to my progress, development and inspiration.
Throughout the first stages of my project I found researching into the variety of companies an interesting experience. I have always been fashion textiles driven, so it was motivating researching into aspects I had not yet considered such as; stationery. I also found myself drawn into researching marketing values from each company such as their environmental ethics and how they publish their brand out into the world via social media, blogs and advertising. I found creating my Pecha Kucha presentation helpful in choosing what path I want to take as I could look at each element (stationery, fashion textile and interior) in depth and chose which one was right for me. I decided to go with my heart and stick with fashion textiles. Deciding to go with something I’ve always wanted to explore, I chose Element as my final company; a skate and surf brand. I will be focussing my designs around menswear, particularly young active males between the ages of 17 and 25. I was excited to dive into this although I was a little wary as I need to do a lot of research in regards to my target audience as I have never designed anything for a male before. The first lesson on colour theory is when I began to flourish in this project, I have never learned anything about colour previously besides the little self-taught knowledge through experimenting. I decided to re-create my colour palette and revisit a variety of studio design techniques such as; stencils, splattering, stippling and the ruling pen. I want to carry on refining these even further than I have and make my drawing style perfect for my target audience and company to help and inspire me when it comes to the designing aspect of my brief.
